What’s the cost of conservation? This summer, we head to Richardson Bay, off Sausalito, where the liveaboard sailing community has been dismantled in the name of restoring eelgrass. Black bears are moving into the North Bay, and we look at what it means to live with them. We go sailing in Carquinez Strait amid the ospreys, follow a turtle on an odyssey through Redwood Creek, visit a new beach in San Francisco, and consider the overachieving elderberry. Plus: the meaning of a tomato, tree trimmers, slugs, and everything you ever wanted to know about pigeons.
