Can California’s forests survive the next Dixie Fire? This fall, we travel to the as-yet-unburned parts of the Plumas National Forest to investigate where federal wildfire money is going. We peer under docks at a feathery fouler. We tour gardens where immigrants are blending ecologies into a new sense of home. We hike one trail across San Francisco, another near Santa Cruz, and a third that traverses John Muir’s old digs. We chase butterflies, swim in the salt of fall, consider Dorothea Lange, and learn how spiders fly. Plus: mountain beavers and candlesnuff fungi.
